Detailed description

DAY 1: Driving south through Elefsis (home of the Elefsinian Mysteries) you will pass the island of Salamis. In the narrow straits, the Greek fleet won a decisive victory over the Persian fleet (480BC). Arrive at Corinth canal. (photos stop).
The 6,346 m (4 miles) long isthmus is one of the 4 pre 20th c. man made waterways, considered as a wonder of the world. Up to the 12th c. ships were dragged on rollers across the isthmus. Corinth was one of the richest commercial centres of antiquity.
The canal opened in 1893. St Paul lived and preached in Corinth for 18 months.

Drive on and arrive at EPIDAURUS. The theatre of Epidaurus, the most perfect theatre of Ancient Greece, famous for its remarkable acoustics, was built between 340-330 BC and is still in use today. Next to it you will visit the Asklipeion, centre of the Greek medical world, and birth place of Asclepius, the god of medicine and father of Hygeia =(health). Psychotherapy, hydrotherapy and brain surgeries were performed here.

Next stop is NAFPLION, an attractive port city, capital of modern Greece (1828-1834), with remarkable Venetian architecture. This charming hamlet is well-known as one of the most romantic spots. Wander through the small streets bordered by neoclassical mansions covered with hanging bougainvillea; admire hidden churches and stop for refreshing beverages at beautiful cafés and bars. If you can, climb up the stairs to the 18th-c. citadel to watch the sunset and enjoy panoramic views over the Gulf. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 2: The morning you are free to explore NAFPLION and at +/- 13:30 depart for MYCENAE, the wealthiest kingdom of the late Bronze Era (1350-1200 BC). MYCENAE was the kingdom of Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek army during the Trojan war. Most of you remember Mycenae from the gold masks unearthed here.
Visit the remains of the ancient city, the lions' Gate, the circle graves, the cult centre, the Palace complex, on the citadel and at the end visit the treasury of Atreus (the largest and best preserved of the surviving tholoi). Excavations begun in 1841 and 33 years later Schlieman unearthed tombs, Palaces and other relics that were mentioned by Homer, proving that what he was writing was based on fact.
16:00 End of the sightseeing tour and return to Athens. Arrive at +/- 18:30
